High costs forces super market closure

The new supermarket where Centre Point used to be may become a new six-storey building or something else in the near future now that the present company has gone into voluntary liquidation only one year after it opened for business.

Liquidator Martin Saint Hilaire said the owner could not pay for the electricity bill, Vanuatu Brewery bill and rent anymore and went into liquidation.

The liquidator said the company owed Unelco approximately 10 million vatu, Vanuatu Brewery 10 million vatu and the landlord 16 million vatu.

Where will you get the money to fund social services, meet MP expenses?

Dear Editor,

I refer to your front-page article issue no. 3112 dated Friday December 10, 2010.

Firstly statements stated that the Minister of Finance, Mr Carcasses said “the country (Vanuatu) will still rely on indirect taxes such as VAT”. Secondly, the new Minister of Finance said, “he is not in favour of such direct taxes”.

My simple questions are - How and Where will the Minister find money for the following:

1. cost of medicine
2. payment for the increase of MP salaries and allowances
3. cost of Vanuatu Embassies overseas

New Government and revenue shortfall

Dear Editor,

Allow me in the dwindling lights of 2010 to comment on the Impending Vanuatu Government Deficit of 2010.

The Government's Economists and Advisers probably had a Merry Christmas despite their grossly erroneous government revenue projections. The projections were based on equally optimistic economic growth projections. The result is that Vanuatu government will be in deficit. The amount of deficit may exceed 1.2 billion vatu. The conservative figure of 1.2 billion is around 8.5% of government budget. In the Private Sector, somebody would have been fired for negligence.

Free trade - Xmas & the VPF

Dear Editor,

Whatever happened to free trade, especially now when we hear the VPF preventing aspiring young entrepreuniel ni-Van musicians from strutting their stuff in town with their so-called keeping Port Vila safe?

Or we joining the WTO so the VPF must protect foreign investors and bugger the locals?

A cheap and exciting holiday treat, 30 minutes from Vila

Gideon George Manulapa from Lelepa was Christmas host to dozens of local and overseas visitors to his Eco Lodge, just a few kilometres beyond Lelepa Landing, during this last weekend.

It is not only bungalow accommodation, but a camping area which has all the facilities you could want and is right on the water and owning heaps of deep, dark and breezy shade.

Gideon has put his land to excellent use and is never going to part with it. His children, he says, tell him he must never relinquish it. He warns other custom land owners against selling their birthright.

Young people committed to business incentive

Save the Children’s Youth Outreach Project (YOP) research activities in Port Vila are now in full swing.

YOP Project Manager Ellise Sailas revealed this month YOP activities revolves around communities it works with to report their findings on a research implemented in June this year.

This research is on opportunities for young people in the existing communities working with Save the Children. The four project sites are Ewandau (Eratap), Nikinipen (Blacksands), Melematt and Ohlen Freshwind.

Store Manager says medicine sufficient

Manager of General Medical Store, Steven Hosea, has said in the absence of the Director General that the situation involving the acute shortage of medicine in the country is over and they have enough medical supplies to send to all operating medical outlets throughout all six Provinces.

Following the recent public outcry over the shortage, thanks to donor partners and humanitarian agencies, much needed medical supplies were rushed in by air as well as by boat.

Today is not a public holiday: State Office

The State Office has confirmed that today is not a public holiday like December 24
While many are wondering whether the New Year’s Public Holiday will be moved to today, Friday 31st or Monday the 2nd of January 2011, the State Office has stated it will be celebrated on Saturday.

Although the public holiday falls on a weekend, Private Secretary to the Head of State, Rave Nigai told Daily Post that according to the Public Holidays Act, public holidays can only be moved to the following day if it falls on a Sunday.
