Vanuatu not No. 1 cocaine source: Police

The Commissioner of Police, Arthur Caulton, has dismissed speculation that Vanuatu is the number one “source country” for cocaine.

He said he is aware of the information widely circulated but said it has no substance and is false.

North Pentecost council of chiefs appointed

A new North Pentecost Councilof Chiefs was presented to the people of Pentecost, during Pentecost Day celebrations, held at the Anglican Church compound.
This is the first time that a full North Pentecost Council for Port Vila was elected to take care of their people as well as dealing with social issues arising amongst the people of North Pentecost in Port Vila and equally important to liaise with other islands chiefs in Port Vila and government authorities on issues affecting their respective people.

Vanuatu-Solomons Islands-China Alumni Association established

The 3rd Study Tour for Pacific Island Countries of 2013 in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) ended on an inspiring note, in particular for Vanuatu and Solomon Islands delegates.

In a bid to maintain dialogue and ensure continuity on issues of mutual interest the Vanuatu-Solomon Islands-China Alumni Association (VSICAA) was formed at the Sunny hotel in Hangzhou province, China on May 16, 2013.

Women celebrate 33 years

The theme for this year’s National Women’s Day was “Respect”.
A church service led by Father Savi of the Anglican Church was held to commemorate the “National Women’s Day on May 15.

The Vanuatu National Council of Women (VNCW) has for the last couple of years organized a church service to commemorate this event.

This year women once again gathered to celebrate and made reflections on the 33 years of endless struggle to advance the rights for women and to be recognized by society.

Seaside community display to councilors its tourism site

A new tourism site has been recently launched in Port Vila called the ‘Port Vila Tourism Ghetto’.

The community of Seaside Tongoa owns and manages this site. Resident, Tom Lan Alick, from Tongoa with the support from community constructed it.
On a request from the community, Chairman of Tourism in Port Vila Municipal Council, Noel Lango and Councilor Zacharai Charley made the first visit to witness the inaugural operation of the site last week.

Councilor Lango through his spokesperson, Willie Saksak, said this is the first of any tourism site to operate within the Municipal Boundary.

Vanuatu insight on China’s poverty alleviation and sustainable development efforts

Three Members of the Vanuatu Parliament and two senior political party members, guests of the Communist Party of China (CPC) acquired first-hand insight into how the country ranking as the world’s second largest economy, is tackling poverty hand in hand with sustainable development efforts in a study tour spanning from China’s capital Beijing to the provinces of Shaanxi and Zhejiang.

The 2013 visit took place after the Chinese leadership transition in a decade and on the 35th year of China’s Reform and opening up.

MOU in line with late Chief Kalsakau’s vision

The late paramount chief of Ifira, Chief Graham Kalsakau II’s vision of a walkway from the Main Wharf to Malapoa Point looks set to come true, at least in part, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government, Port Vila Municipal Council and Shefa Province yesterday.

Partners in the Joint Port Vila Beautification Project signed the MOU on the Municipal Stage in the presence of the representatives of the donor partners in the project who are the High Commissioner of New Zealand and a representative of the High Commissioner of Australia.

West Papua should be full MSG member: Acting PM

In his capacity as Acting Prime Minister on May 17, Minister Ralph Regenvanu met with the FLNKS leader Victor Tutukoro.

The subject of their discussions centered on the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Leaders Meeting in Kanaky, (New Caledonia) next month.

The highlight of their discussion was West Papua’s participation and the question of whether Vanuatu will include West Papua in the Vanuatu’s delegation or not.

I would be most grateful if you could allow me space in your paper, to publicly state the essence of my argument concerning the long running dispute case above, for security by all peoples of West Ambae and or interested individuals.

I invite all reasonable people of West Ambae and or interested individuals to ponder these facts:-
(1) The other party to the dispute is not blood related to my family lineage.

(2) The land in dispute is actually “hereditary” land handed down through my family lineage.

Kalsakau granted extra 28 days to get additional evidence

Petitioner for Port Vila constituency election petition, Ishmael Kalsakau’s request for an extra 28 days has been granted by the Supreme Court to gather additional evidence.

This has shifted the Port Vila election petition to July 5 when the court will hear if the 2012 general election candidate has a case to proceed before the court.

The Port Vila election petition is one of the remaining 8 election petitions filed after the 2012 general election. Sixteen have been struck off by the court so far.
