Comics now available for schools

Parents, you don’t have to worry about purchasing Spiderman, Batman, or Asterix’s comics again for your child.

Why not give them something that can ‘kill two birds with one stone – entertaining, yet educational – an edutainment type, like the newly published “Yumi Evriwan I Nidim blong Save Maths” comic.

The Vanuatu Teachers Association of Mathematics (VANTAM) has conceived a perfect product, when they launched the first ever mathematics comic book in the national dialect and the two Metropolitan Languages early February this year – another one of those – ‘For Vanuatu, By Vanuatu’ products. The material was perfectly crafted and designed by the Wan Smol Bag Theatre group and can be read by pupils from years 3 and above. The greatest challenge in formal education is the ability to translate the lessons taught inside the curriculum into local concept. Formal education is terrific yet based on Western experiences and tradition, but now we have a mathematical material, that is weaved from local experience.

The project was initiated last year following a series of discussions within the VANTAM collective. Funds for the project were made available through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), as part of its continuous efforts to help the advancement of mathematical standards in Vanuatu.

JICA Vanuatu Office has applauded the efforts of Wan Smol Bag Theatre group, who were responsible for producing the booklet, the students of Kawenu Primary and Eccole Centre Ville for the times table songs for the audio versions of the booklet and many others that have contributed with tremendous time and efforts to see this project come to fruition.

Project Formulation Adviser for JICA Vanuatu Office, Ms. Hiroko Watahashi who is in charge of distribution of the books confirmed the total cost of the project is VT 2 million and the comics will be available for all primary schools throughout Vanuatu.

“We are currently looking at dispatching the materials in March to all schools throughout Vanuatu”.

The book has 52 pages and comes in two versions, an English version and a French version. Both versions have a Bislama Translation. The English/Bislama version will have 2000 copies whilst the French/Bislama version will have 1000 copies. Each booklet comes with an audio CD.

Some segments from the audio CD’s are already receiving air time on the National Radio.
