The second annual Far North Queensland (FNQ) Super League All-star weekend took place on Friday, January 22 at the Bendigo Bank Basketball Centre in Cairns.

Along with the All-Star game, the 2nd annual Super League Slam-Dunk contest and 3-point shootout was also held on the same evening.

The All-Star event, which is in its second year, showcased premier basketball players from the 2009/10 FNQ Super league join together to play in City and Country representative All-star teams.

Players were voted into these All-Star teams through a 3-2-1 points system which is completed by referees after each FNQ Super League game.

One of the players that was voted to participate in this year’s Slam Dunk Contest was Mele Village’s very own Sylvain Sambo.

Sylvain, who has played in the FNQ Super League for two years now missed out on last year’s All Star Weekend.

This year he was very eager to show his skills and prove his spot in the Super League.

Getting into the Slam Dunk contest has been a lifelong dream for Sylvain, and this year he was very fortunate to be chosen.

Competing against well known Cairns players, it was not easy to impress the home court.

Sylvain came fourth in the contest, however that did not crash his spirits. “The only thing I can do is learn from this experience and do better in the future. I am already looking forward to the next 2010/11 All-Star Weekend,” says a determined Sambo.

This is only the beginning of Sylvain’s journey, and we hope to see more of him in the Cairns basketball courts very soon.
