On behalf of the International Women’s Day Committee, we would like to convey our foremost gratitude and appreciation to the following organizations and individuals who sincerely contributed willingly to make this event a great success on Friday the 7th March 2008. Though it was a half day program it was a great time for women, men and youths of Port Vila gathering together and supporting the issues that women addressed during the float parade and Awareness Talks.

Briefly the theme for this year is “Shaping progress” which for Port Vila the Committee decided that this day be held in addressing issues that hinder the progressive development of women in Vanuatu. The issues women raised focused around the uprising crime and violence against women and children, the unfortunate results of Cervical Cancer affecting women in Vanuatu, the barriers women encounter as leaders at all levels of our society. Not to mention the fact that women do not understand that their votes are meant to be secret and they have the right to vote a person who will be able to voice her needs at the provincial and national level. To name a few these are some matters brought up for our leaders to take note of. Thus, working together with women on sorting out appropriate strategies on addressing these national problems, so that women have the full capacity in contributing enormously, and positively to the national development.
